🍰We Made JK Cakes!🍰

đź–¤JK Cakesđź–¤

I made JK cakes for Christmas!

When I say “JK cakes,” I’m thinking of the kind of cakes I associate with high school girls and gyarus in Japan’s Heisei era: getting together after school or on a day off, piling store-bought sweets onto sponge cakes or inexpensive sweet buns, and decorating them however they please.

You don’t need any special baking skills. Just buy the sweets you like and decorate away with cream and chocolate pens.

And because everyone piles on as much of their favorite stuff as they want, the results are usually an absolute mess.

That’s the best part.

This time, I made one large whole cake and four smaller cakes, each inspired by a member of MAJOLICAMAIDEN.

Pink, purple, leopard print, hearts, and silver sugar pearls.

By the time I’d gathered all the things I liked, the table had become quite a sight.

I think the photos speak for themselves.

There’s no way we’re eating these in a civilized manner.

But the funniest part this time wasn’t just the finished cakes.

As I made the four smaller cakes one after another, even the way the ingredients got used up somehow brought out each member’s personality.

Since we’re here, let me tell you about that, too.

🤍First Up: Meiji Gahata🤍

The first cake I made was Meiji’s.

Seniority comes first.

For Meiji’s cake, I went all out with pink decorations and plenty of details drawn with a black chocolate decorating pen.

I drew and decorated to my heart’s content, making it as cute as I could.

And just as I finished, I realized something.

I’d used almost the entire black chocolate pen.

Hey.

We still have three more members to go.

Meiji wasn’t actually the one making the cake, but somehow it started to look as though she’d used it all without a second thought.

I can just imagine her getting so wrapped up in making her cake cute that she’d completely forget to check how much was left.

The finished cake is adorable.

She’d probably be delighted with it.

And there’s almost nothing left for the next person.

She’s a dreamy witch, after all.

Apparently, inventory management isn’t her specialty.

đź©·Second Up: Bibi Jyougasakiđź©·

Next, I made Bibi’s cake.

There was barely any black chocolate pen left after making Meiji’s cake.

I carefully stretched what was left as I finished decorating Bibi’s.

The black chocolate pen lasted. Just barely.

Thank goodness.

But this time, I used up all the pink sugar pearls.

Hey.

That makes two women who apparently didn’t think ahead.

In her own way, Bibi seems just as unlikely as Meiji to hold back when it comes to making her cake cute.

If she thinks, “Oh, that’s cute,” I can picture her piling it on without worrying about what’s left.

Whoever needs the supplies next? That’s a problem for later.

Please remember to deal with it when later comes.

But looking at the finished cake, it really does feel like Bibi.

Pink decorations, hearts, and plenty of sparkle.

You can tell she wouldn’t cut corners when it comes to making something cute.

Her approach to sharing the supplies leaves a little to be desired, but she’s true to her own idea of “cute.”

When you look at Meiji’s and Bibi’s finished cakes, it’s hard to complain.

Which makes this all rather inconvenient.

đź’šThird Up: Wistaria Toujohđź’š

Next up is Wistaria.

I made her cake in a color palette that felt distinctly hers, with purple as the main color.

By this point, the black chocolate decorating pen and the pink sugar pearls were practically gone.

We're slowly running out of supplies here.

Still, Wistaria's cake was finished without a hitch.

The trouble came afterward.

Once all four cakes were complete, a chocolate pen went flying into Wistaria's cake.

Why?

It knocked off part of the decoration I'd worked so hard on.

That got me thinking: what would Wistaria herself make of this?

She's the kind of woman who can find beauty even in broken things.

If she saw the damaged cake, she might simply say,

“It looks like a sculpture~”

Or something along those lines.

She hasn't actually said that, of course. I just feel like she'd find something to appreciate in its new appearance.

However.

I want to fix it.

I worked hard on that cake, you know.

Just because Wistaria might be perfectly happy with it doesn't mean its creator has to be.

So I repaired it as best I could.

But I couldn't get it completely back to the way it was.

I'd used up the purple chocolate pen from the damaged decoration while making Momo's cake, which was the last one I made.

There's none left.

Wistaria might think it's beautiful even with a piece missing.

I want it back the way it was.

But I don't have the supplies.

This is an inventory situation that makes absolutely no one happy.

Anyway, who sent that chocolate pen flying?

The culprit remains unknown.

All we know for certain is that Wistaria's cake was the victim.

And there's a good chance I'm more hung up on the whole incident than she would be.

đź’śLast Up: Momo Kissmeđź’ś

Momo’s cake was the last of the four I made.

Let’s take stock of the situation.

There’s barely any black chocolate pen left.

The pink sugar pearls are gone.

And we’re running pretty low on supplies across the board.

What a terrible handover.

Still, even starting from that sorry state of affairs, Momo’s cake turned out looking just like him.

Looking at what’s left and figuring out how to use it to make a cake that feels like his own.

A shortage of ingredients doesn’t mean he’d just throw something together.

He can make something good out of limited resources.

What a resourceful guy.

I sometimes get a similar impression of Momo when the four of them sing together.

He supports the girls’ voices, fills in what’s missing, and adjusts his role to suit the situation.

Somehow, this cake felt very much like him, too.

There is, however, one problem.

Momo used up the last of the purple chocolate pen.

That meant I couldn’t fully repair Wistaria’s cake when part of it was damaged afterward.

Wistaria herself might find the cake beautiful even with a piece missing.

But I wanted to fix it.

If only there’d been some purple chocolate pen left, I could have done a little more.

Momo.

You’re getting scolded.

Of course, when I was making the last cake, there was no way to know that a chocolate pen would come flying along later and cause an accident.

For that matter, I’m the one who made all these cakes.

When you think about it calmly, there’s absolutely no reason for him to be scolded.

But I wanted to fix that cake, so you’re getting scolded anyway.

Unfair.

In the end, perhaps all four of them would have been too absorbed in making their own cakes to think about much else.

And somehow, Momo, who went last, not only had to prove he could cope with a shortage of ingredients but also ended up getting scolded by me over the aftermath of an accident no one could possibly have predicted.

Thanks for your hard work, Momo.

đź–¤Who's Going to Eat All This?đź–¤

And with that, the big cake and four little cakes were finished!

Everything was pink, sparkly, and very, very sweet-looking.

They ended up looking less like cakes and more like a display of all my favorite things.

Personally, I couldn't be happier.

There was just one practical problem.

Sugar.

I'd piled store-bought sweets and sweet buns high with cream, chocolate, sugar pearls, and whatever else I felt like adding.

Naturally, the result was extremely sweet.

Making them had been so much fun.

But the moment it was time to eat them, reality came knocking.

In the end, it took several days to finish everything.

Mostly with Momo doing the eating.

First he had to deal with the shortage of ingredients, and now he's responsible for getting through the finished cakes, too.

Just how much work are we going to make this man do?

Still, I suspect he doesn't mind.

The sweets, anyway.

đź–¤Making Cakes for the Four of Themđź–¤

All I set out to do this time was make cakes inspired by the four members.

But as I worked, even the order in which I used the ingredients and the little accident along the way started to remind me of their personalities.

Meiji gets so caught up in making her own cake cute that she uses almost all the black chocolate pen.

Bibi somehow makes do with what's left, only to use up all the pink sugar pearls instead.

Wistaria seems like she'd find a different kind of beauty in her cake, even after it was damaged.

And Momo manages to make a cake that feels entirely his own, starting with hardly any ingredients left at all.

And then there's me, so determined to restore Wistaria's cake that I unfairly take it out on Momo for using up the supplies.

We've gained a fifth member.

Of course, this is just me having fun imagining the four of them in the things that actually happened while I was making their cakes.

But I love how little everyday incidents like these can reveal sides of them I hadn't noticed before.

It felt like I'd gotten to know the four of them in a different way from when I'm thinking about their voices or visual designs.

Still, this was quite the eventful cake-making session.

Next time, I think I'll prepare a few more supplies.

Especially chocolate pens.

And I'll try to make sure no chocolate pens go flying anywhere near the finished cakes.

Who threw it?
