đź–¤Looking at Them Through a Romantic Lensđź–¤
MAJOLICAMAIDEN has three women and one man: Meiji Gahata, Bibi Jyougasaki, Wistaria Toujoh, and Momo Kissme.
Sometimes, when I think about how these four relate to one another, I feel like I'm watching a romance unfold.
This is not an announcement of any official couples, though.
If I were enjoying MAJOLICAMAIDEN as a story, what kinds of daydreams would I come up with from what I know about the characters and the way their voices sound together? That's how I'd like to look at them today.
Yes, these are the creator's own daydreams.
The awkward part is that my source is technically official, so they might sound more convincing than they should.
For this article, I'm focusing on Momo and each of the three women. But that doesn't mean romance in MAJOLICAMAIDEN is limited to male–female pairings. Bibi and Wistaria are a popular duo, too, and I'm genuinely curious about the relationships all of you imagine.
Have fun with whatever pairings and stories come to mind!
You could call what follows my “official interpretation,” but I'm not making any new relationships or specific events official canon. If you like my take, you're welcome to see the four this way and draw on it for fan works. Other interpretations are just as welcome.
In fact, I'd love to know how you see them.
Now, let's start with the two who give me the strongest classic-romance feeling.
🤍Could He Be a Prince?🤍
To me, Meiji and Momo feel like they could step straight into a classic romance. Put them side by side and they already look like characters from a storybook.
I've imagined a little scene with them before.
When Meiji has just woken up, I picture the line between dreams and reality being even blurrier than usual. Maybe anyone who gently wakes her feels a bit like a prince to her.
If Momo came to wake her, I can almost hear her mumble, half asleep:
“Romeo?”
And Momo would probably answer:
“I'm not Romeo.”
But I don't think he'd go out of his way to burst her bubble. He might even look a little pleased.
Apparently, he's not Romeo.
What a shame.
Of course, this doesn't mean Meiji is in love with Momo. I'm imagining a girl who might see the person waking her as a prince for a moment, and a man who's happy enough to play along with her dream.
I hear that storybook quality in their singing, too. Meiji's voice has a clear outline, yet there's something strangely light and drifting about it. Momo's, meanwhile, is sweet and full-bodied. Beside her, he can sound like someone ready to catch her.
The thing is, Meiji doesn't necessarily settle neatly into the place he's made for her.
I can picture her playing around in it instead, absently reaching for the accessories he's carefully arranged and accidentally knocking them out of place.
There's something adorable about that dynamic.
I've imagined another exchange, too. Suppose Meiji sighed, “There isn't a happy ending waiting for me.” I feel like Momo might reply, “Then let's make you one.”
...
Well, that's a problem.
He's flirting, isn't he?
Whether he actually means to or not, it sounds terribly romantic to me.
But whether Meiji wants that happy ending, or would choose Momo as her prince, is a different question. Just because these two suit a classic romance doesn't mean their story has to become one.
Even before any romance begins, there's something beautifully romantic about the way they look and sound together.
That's how I see them, anyway.
đź©·A Pair Who Just Clickđź©·
Bibi and Momo give me a very different impression.
When I hear their voices together, they sound like partners in mischief. They're so comfortable with each other that they almost feel like childhood friends, with none of that awkward tension between them.
They aren't actually established as childhood friends, of course. That's just the relationship their voices bring to mind.
I've imagined Bibi telling Momo, when he talks about his views on love:
“Maybe conventional dating just isn't your thing.”
She wouldn't blindly agree with everything he says, but I don't think she'd dismiss him, either. If something doesn't make sense in real life, she'd point it out. At the same time, she'd understand that he isn't careless with people he loves.
And I can picture her saying all this while looking at her nails, rather than delivering some grand, serious speech.
She might look like she's barely listening, then turn around and say exactly the thing that matters. That's the kind of woman Bibi seems to me.
Now, what if Bibi had a bad experience in a relationship? Say her boyfriend cheated on her.
I think Momo would be angry right alongside her. He'd be upset that she'd been hurt, and if he thought the boyfriend's behavior was awful, he'd say so.
But I really can't picture him jumping in with, “Dump that guy and choose me instead.”
That's what I like about him here.
He wouldn't treat her heartbreak as his chance to get picked. I think he'd understand that what Bibi does next is her decision.
Just to be clear, I'm not saying she actually got cheated on, or even that she currently has a boyfriend. This is all hypothetical.
Sorry, Momo. I've made you angry over something that hasn't happened.
Still, if these two did become a couple, I can imagine them feeling like a couple you might actually meet. Going out together, bickering over silly things, noticing when the other is in a bad mood. I can picture their everyday life carrying on without any big dramatic event.
But I don't know whether Bibi is even interested in romance right now. Momo being an attractive man doesn't automatically mean she wants to date him.
I can hear her casually saying, “I'm just not feeling that right now.” And I don't think Momo would try to talk her out of it.
They could make a believable couple, but they're already close without becoming one.
That's the down-to-earth charm I hear in Bibi and Momo.
đź’šSomehow, We've Ended Up With a Lady and Her Attendantđź’š
Now for these two.
Wistaria and Momo.
When I put them together, I sometimes end up imagining a lady and her attendant. Wistaria is the one being served, and Momo is the man standing at her side.
This is not an official arrangement.
No contracts have been signed.
I suspect it's because of the particular atmosphere I hear in Wistaria's voice. There's something about it that makes me picture a person of unusually high standing.
I'm not talking about whose singing is technically better. I mean the kind of character I imagine when I hear her.
She sounds like someone who could chat with you quite casually and still seem to belong to another world. Put her in an extravagant outfit with someone attending to her, and somehow the image just works.
That's what her voice does to my imagination.
Momo has plenty of presence himself, of course. He's a big man with a striking appearance, and some of his vocal modes even have a regal sort of allure. On his own, he could easily look like a king.
And yet, beside Wistaria, I start seeing him as her knight, bodyguard, or attendant.
That doesn't mean he's somehow beneath her. What interests me is that even with someone as striking as Momo standing next to her, Wistaria's peculiar atmosphere remains completely intact.
As for ordinary boyfriend-and-girlfriend romance, I haven't really found it in these two yet.
Rather than imagining dates and the moment they start going out, I want to look at them as a single composition first. They have the kind of presence that makes me want to put them on display like a work of art.
That doesn't mean I've decided Wistaria will never fall in love.
She even has an air about her that makes me think she'd suit the role of a widow.
She isn't one.
I haven't given her a marriage or a bereavement in her past.
I've somehow invented an entire life for her just by listening to her voice.
But here's something that makes me curious: Momo has an awful lot of vocal modes.
They sound like a lady and her attendant to me right now, but another combination of their voices might reveal an entirely different side of them. Maybe I'd hear Momo standing beside Wistaria as a lover. Maybe a romance I haven't noticed yet will suddenly appear when they sing together.
Perhaps I simply haven't tried the right combination.
It seems a shame to settle on one interpretation before I've explored all those possibilities.
I'm getting ahead of myself when I don't even know whether Wistaria is interested in romance at all.
What does she think?
Even if I asked, I doubt I'd get a straightforward answer.
She's Wistaria, after all.
đź’śHow Does He Have So Many Voices?đź’ś
After thinking about these three pairings, I found myself looking at Momo's vocal modes all over again.
He has an astonishing range of vocal personalities. Sweetness, glamour, strength, a slightly dangerous edge: he can express each of them in a different way, while still being the same man. There are enough variations that you could almost imagine giving some of them to entirely separate characters.
Why have I given all of them to Momo alone?
You'd think the person making them would know.
But when I think about who he is and how he relates to the girls, I start to wonder whether all these voices have naturally gathered around him because he can meet them in so many different moods.
When Meiji sings as though she's in a dream, he can step into that story with her. When Bibi sings with a powerful groove, he can push back or support her. When Wistaria sounds like some otherworldly being, he can find a way to stand beside her, too.
That doesn't mean I see Momo as a man who exists just to adapt to the girls.
He must have songs he wants to sing himself, feelings he wants to express in his own voice, and things he wants from his relationships. If he became a conveniently adjustable boyfriend-shaped accessory for the three of them, that would be a problem.
I already make him work hard enough singing harmonies.
What I find exciting is that singing with the girls reveals different sides of Momo, and singing with Momo reveals different sides of the girls. Neither exists simply to bring out the other's charm.
Each time the four sing together, I notice something new about them.
I hope that keeps happening.
đź©·And What About the Other Pairings? đź’š
I've spent most of this article talking about Momo with each of the three women, but those are hardly the only pairings anyone can imagine.
Take Bibi and Wistaria. They're a popular duo within MAJOLICAMAIDEN, and because their debuts were close together, people have often seen them as a pair. I love the way they harmonize with each other, too.
Bibi's voice has a powerful, forward-driving quality, while Wistaria's has a sharpness that cuts right through. Put them together and you get a very particular kind of glamour.
It makes me happy that people have long enjoyed imagining a special relationship between them.
That doesn't mean they're officially a romantic couple. But if you hear them and think, “These two would make such a good romance,” please have fun imagining it!
Women together, a woman and a man, a pairing I haven't even thought of yet: different people will hear different possibilities in these four. I chose to write about Momo and the girls today simply because those were the three combinations I felt like talking about, not because I want to rule out anyone else.
Actually, I'd love to see the versions of these four that exist in your imaginations.
There's one thing I personally enjoy keeping in mind when I daydream about them: what each of them might genuinely want.
Two people might look wonderful as a couple without necessarily wanting to date each other. One might be interested in someone else, or just not in the mood for romance. They might care deeply about each other and still not want to become lovers.
And a life without romance is a perfectly good life, too. Being someone's partner isn't the only way to be happy.
I like imagining the four with those possibilities in mind.
That isn't me saying fan works have to follow my interpretation. Please enjoy stories where romance begins, where relationships change, or where things take a turn I never expected.
What makes me especially happy is seeing the four treated as people with feelings and wishes of their own. I'd feel a little sad if someone's feelings had to disappear just to make a pairing happen.
But a story that explores what both people want and lets them fall in love along the way?
I'd love to read that.
đź–¤We Don't Have to Decide How It Ends Yetđź–¤
I see Momo as a man who loves all three women deeply. But none of them is established as his girlfriend, and receiving his affection doesn't mean they necessarily feel the same way romantically.
Meiji has her own feelings. So does Bibi. So does Wistaria. And Momo has his, too.
Loving someone doesn't mean they have to love you back in exactly the same way. But I don't think a relationship becomes any less meaningful just because the people in it never become a couple.
Singing together. Knowing what someone loves. Getting angry on their behalf when things go wrong. Playing along with their view of the world. Discovering an unexpected side of yourself when you stand beside them.
I think those little things are part of what makes these four who they are together.
And if romance did begin between any two of them, I don't think it would automatically erase the affection they feel for the others. What they choose to do with those feelings, though, would be up to each person involved.
For now, I'm not in a hurry to give their relationships one definitive ending.
There are still voices I haven't heard and expressions I haven't discovered.
I'd like to keep watching a little longer.
đź–¤How Do You See the Four of Them?đź–¤
Today, I've been daydreaming about these relationships as the creator of MAJOLICAMAIDEN, but also as someone enjoying them like a fan.
These are my own official interpretations, not announcements of new canon relationships or events. If you like these dynamics, you're welcome to enjoy the four this way or bring them into your fan works.
I'd be just as happy to hear you say, “Really? I see those two completely differently! ”
You don't have to agree with me. You might show me something wonderful about these characters that I haven't discovered yet.
Imagine any pairing you like, or cherish a relationship that never becomes romantic. Personally, I love wondering what each of the four might be feeling and what they'd actually want, but that isn't a request for everyone to follow my take. Asking yourself, “What would this character think?” or “How would the other person feel?” can be part of the fun of loving a character, too.
I'd love to hear what kind of people you imagine when you listen to their voices and look at their illustrations. Who seems close to whom? What conversations do you imagine them having? Do you see a romance, or does their bond feel more like something that doesn't need to become one?
Please tell me about it.
The funny thing is, I don't know absolutely everything about the four of them myself.
Even though I created them?
Apparently so.
Every time I make them sing, draw them, or read your impressions, I discover a side I hadn't seen before. I hope we can keep getting to know them together.
For now, I think I'll go looking for the vocal-mode combination that might finally make a romance between Wistaria and Momo appear.
And if I don't find one, that's fine, too.
They can stay a lady and her attendant and sing a wonderful song for us.
